P\u00e5 grunn sildeeventyrets voksende rolle og betydning ble kaien p\u00e5 \u00c5kra bygget og ferdigstilt i 1898. Alt av handel, import og eksport skjedde i havna. Denne skulle skjerme og tilby en trygg havn for fiskefl\u00e5ten. Det ble ogs\u00e5 en tid med mye eksport til andre europeiske land. Mortholmen Sildesalteri bygges i 1918 av Knut Jakobsen m\/familie. Mange av innbyggerne fra \u00c5kra og Karm\u00f8y arbeidet ute p\u00e5 salteriet, og p\u00e5 det meste hadde sildesalteriet en saltekapasitet p\u00e5 720 000 liter. I tillegg til 120 tonn med saltede sildet\u00f8nner. P\u00e5 90-tallet ble det p\u00e5 hobbybasis produsert t\u00f8rket og r\u00f8kt sild p\u00e5 salteriet. To av sildetankene blir omgjort til en koselig stue og et kj\u00f8kken. Den siste sildetanken blir innredet med scene og sitteplasser.
